Nanotechnology and Material Science

Head of Chair: Alexander O. Golubok
Phone: 238-1065

The chair was set up in 1932.

The chair focuses on the physics of durability and plasticity, methods and instruments for investigation of the composition materials, of the structure and properties of substances.

The faculty of the chair are the experts in the electronic, optical, X-ray and near-field (SPM) instruments, and in methods of materials structure and composition with use of the liquid crystals.

The chair has scientific and organizational connections with many institutions such as: Institute of the Analytical Instrument-Making at the Russian Academy of Sciences; Vavilov State Optical Institute; Institute of Material Cultural History at the Russian Academy of Sciences; and other institutions in St. Petersburg, Russia and abroad.

In 1997 the Chair (together with the Institute of the Analytical Instrument-Making and Institute of Material Culture History) won a competition for participation in the Federal Target Program Integration, after having presented a project titled "The Material Science Chair of the St. Petersburg ITMO and the Institute of Analytical Instrument-Making at the Russian Academy of Sciences".

Since 1995 the chair has been training students majoring in Instruments and Methods for Investigation and Diagnostics of Materials.
