The school laboratories and the laboratories for scientific researches attached to the Department are equipped now with modern instruments and computers. Some of the laboratory units are really unique. Among them there are: the special-purpose lasers, the medicine laser complexes, the on-board and space lasers, the instruments for ecological monitoring and for the flying object positioning; devices for the ellipsometry and for the interference measurements, the cryogenic equipment etc. These instruments are used for evaluation of the physical and especially optical properties of materials. There are also the laser set-ups for technological processing.
At the Department student's disposal there is a computerized classroom; in addition, practically all the chairs are equipped with the computers available for students who use them for modeling various physical processes, for solving specific problems in programming and for access to the advanced Internet educational technologies.
A special attention has been paid to development of the new training methods, particularly, provision of remote education. So, the users have an ample opportunity to study certain disciplines independently - through the Internet.
The Department student teams successfully participate in the contests on Physics, Mathematics, Computer Programming at different levels - international, federal, regional and domestic, and often win prizes.
The Department provides an opportunity to the students to continue their education abroad, in the leading universities of the Europe, USA and Asia. Every year up to 10 under- and post-graduate students are awarded with grants for study at the universities of the England, Sweden, USA , Germany and other developed countries.
The Deaprtment teaching staff continuously improves their qualification. The teaching staff includes the scientists prized with the State Premium, the Honored Workers of Science and Technology in the Russia, the Academicians and Corresponding Members of different domestic and foreign Academies. In 2000 three professors of the Physical Engineering Deaprtment have been given a high rank - Honored Workers of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation .
Many graduates of the Department have important achievements in science, engineering and in business. So, the Academician of the Russian Academy of Science, Prof. J.N.Denisyuk is a world-wide recognized inventor of a principle of the three-dimensional holographic imaging.
The Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation , Prof. G.N.Dulnev., Head of the Thermal Physics Chair, took up the president's position in the LITMO since 1974 till 1986.
Scientific activity of the Department members covers a wide range of the fundamental and applied sciences. This activity enables them to involve the students into researches and to enhance their scientific creativity and so to prepare the top skill specialists. Many before graduation from the University have published scientific articles and papers as well as obtained the Invention Certificates. Many graduates continue their education in course of the post-graduate study. More than 30 persons annually study in the post-graduate courses.
The following basic scientific directions are developed at the Department:
- Optics and physics of lasers;
- Laser technologies for various applications;
- Laser spectroscopy;
- Spectroscopy of the solids;
- Heat and mass exchange;
- Energy saving technologies;
- Physics and techniques of the optical communication;
- Electronic power supplying systems of lasers for special purposes;
- Nondestructive testing of the materials and optoelectronics components etc.
Scientific potential of the Department members have allowed them to win in the high level international competitions such as participation in the programs «VEGA» (space research), «Fobos» (investigation of the Mars satellite), creation of certain laser systems for the medicine purposes. Scientists of our Department participate in the programs concerning the solar power engineering, atmosphere monitoring, energy saving processes, new laser technologies, environmental diagnostics, optical designs etc. Scientific and technological achievements of the Physical Engineering Deaprtment have a high professional rating and are recognized in the Russia and abroad as well as by the customers and receive of experts.
In connection with the economy development, the labor market demands for the engineers and researchers including the graduates from our Department increase too. This tendency will be kept the next years.
